Shot Tower Baltimore History

Constructed using over one million bricks, Baltimore Phoenix Shot Tower was designed for producing the lead shots for firearms and hunting. For example, at that time, when the tower was built in 1828, Chesapeake Bay had a lot of ducks. Additionally, for both local and commercial duck hunters and the gaming industry, three more shot towers, along with Phoenix Shot Tower, were producing lead shots from the 1820s to 1830s.

Furthermore, the tower was the tallest structure in America when it was constructed and remained the one for 18 years until the formation of Washington Monument. Notably, Charles Carroll of Carrollton set the cornerstone in 1828, the sole surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence. Remarkably, it was known for producing around two million pounds of lead shots annually during its most active period. Due to its unique architecture and industrial significance, Shot Tower Baltimore MD was listed among the National Historic Landmarks in 1971.

How did the Phoenix Shot Tower Work?

People often wonder how the Phoenix Shot Tower worked. There is a simple concept of physics involved in the process of how the shot tower produced lead shots in the past. Moreover, it used the method called “Drop Shot Method” including the following steps:

  • The workers poured molten lead through a sieve from the very top of the tower.
  • As the molten lead fell from the empty tower, the droplets cooled down and formed the shape of solid round spheres.
  • At the bottom of the tower, these solid spheres were collected in cold water to further solidify them.

An Englishman, William Watts, was the mastermind behind inventing this method, and the lead shots made using this technique were used in military firearms and duck hunting.
