History of Fort Frederick

Constructed using a large stonewall, Fort Frederick was built in 1756 as a defensive structure during the French Indian War. After this, Fort Frederic has been a part of four military wars and conflicts, such as:

  • 1756 to 1757 – French and Indian War
  • 1777 to 1783 – American Revolutionary War
  • 1861 to 1865 – American Civil War
  • Local military acts in regional conflicts

Serving as the Civilian Conservation Corps Camp, the place secured the title of Maryland’s very first state park. Furthermore, the workers burned midnight oil and restored the fort and the two barracks after it had been abandoned in 1791. Now known as the Fort Frederick State Park, this fort is standing as one of the most historic landmarks in Maryland, waiting to be discovered.
