A Guide To The Best Places To Visit In Richmond, Virginia

We have heard many fascinating stories about the historic sites and vibrant art and culinary spots in Richmond, Virginia and planned a five-day trip to this city with my family. As we finalized the trip, all of us were excited and couldn’t wait to enjoy the adventurous journey. Moreover, we planned ahead about the places and destinations to be explored in Richmond, Virginia because we wanted to visit as many top attractions as we could in those five days. Here, I will narrate our fun-filled family vacation to Richmond, Virginia and how much fun we had there.

First Day Fun

Waking up early in the morning, we were all ready and thrilled to start the journey. Traveling for 4-5 hours, we reached Richmond in the afternoon and ease into comfort at a luxurious and high-end hotel. After resting and refueling, we started the day one adventure by wandering around the vibrant streets. Strolling down the street, we decided to make our first stop at Monument Avenue, one of the historic landmarks in the United States. Although the statues are now removed, we learned a lot about the colonial past and significance of this place.

We dined at Lemaire, an upscale restaurant and the best southern cuisine eatery in the town. My husband and I savored their crab cakes while kids loved their fried chicken and sandwiches. Moreover, the overall ambiance and taste of the restaurant was really amazing.

Day 2 for History Exploration

As a history buff, I insisted on exploring the significant heritage of Richmond and the historic sites of the city. We planned our first visit to the Virginia State Capitol, a remarkable historic landmark. The guided tour assisted us throughout the exploration and told us many stories and the designer, Thomas Jefferson, of this stunning piece of architecture.

The next historic destination to visit was the American Civil War Museum, learning about the history of the civil war. We were amazed watching the engaging exhibits and attending the educational session. It allowed us to understand the detailed history behind the civil war and the sacrifices of the nation.

Next, we decided to have lunch at Mama J’s Kitchen, offering the original and authentic taste of Richmond culinary. In addition, their fried catfish, pork chops, and ribs were beyond tasty, assuring a memorable dining experience.

For afternoon exploration, we selected Hollywood Cemetery, the final resting destination of various influential figures of America. It was a serene experience, as the beautiful scenic views of James River and tall green trees created a calm environment.

Day 3 for Discovering Art and Culture

Day three was all about discovering the art and culture of Richmond. Firstly, we stopped at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) to explore their diverse art collection. From historic masterpieces to contemporary artwork, the museum covers different art styles for all art lovers. Kids indulged themselves in painting workshops and tried their inner artistic skills.

After grabbing a few bites of lunch at museum café, we went to the Science Museum of Virginia. The educational tour was really informative and adventurous, as we explored many new technology machineries.

Dinner was at The Roosevelt, a well-known restaurant in the neighborhood of church Hill. Moreover, their delectable dishes and highly attentive service made our dining experience wonderful.

Day 4 in Outdoor Adventures

The adventure of day four started at Maymont, a park and estate featuring beautiful gardens and a zoo. Undeniably, this Victorian Estate is a stunning gift for the Richmond community, offering scenic walking trails. Kids were thrilled observing the wildlife in the zoo while my husband and I strolled around the gardens.

After enjoying some time in the park, my husband rented bikes and we explored the striking area of Virginia Capital Trail. Furthermore, the adventurous ride along the trails of James River was an unforgettable experience.

For dinner, we relished the lamb chops and spanakopita at Stella’s, a famous Greek eatery in Richmond, Virginia. The cozy ambiance and flavorful dishes made our dinner really satisfying.

Day 5 for Farewell and Sweet Memories

The last day in Richmond was to explore the shopping scenes and soak in the the natural beauty of the city. We went to Carytown, a shopping center in Richmond, Virginia. I bought some antique jewelry pieces while the kids caught some souvenirs. After this, we went for tasty brunch at The Daily Kitchen & Bar.

Before heading back home, we decided to visit this last destination, the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. The picturesque view of greenery and flowers marked a beautiful end of our memorable trip to Richmond.

As we arrived at the airport, all of us were filled with happiness and alluring memories of our trip. Significantly, we explored all captivating sites and must-visit destinations of Richmond, Virginia. The delicious food, lively environment, and hospitable people allowed us to collect moments to cherish forever.
